In October 2024, a delegation from Foreign Trade University (FTU), led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Anh Tuan – President of FTU, attended the 70th anniversary celebration of Woosong Education Organization in South Korea.

The delegation included M.A. Bui Ngoc Dung – Head of the Department of Equipment Management, and Dr.Deputy Head of the Faculty of International Education. The visit marked a significant step in the collaboration between FTU and Woosong Education Organization.

During the visit, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bùi Anh Tuấn met with Woosong’s leadership to discuss new cooperation opportunities. The delegation also toured Woosong’s modern facilities, including SolBridge International School of Business and advanced Hybrid and Smart Classrooms.

The FTU delegation participated in the inauguration of Woosong Global Park, a symbolic venue featuring national flowers representing Woosong’s international partners.

At the 70th anniversary ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Anh Tuan delivered a congratulatory speech, commending Woosong’s contributions to education and expressing hope for continued collaboration. Vietnamese students in the FTU-SolBridge program showcased a cultural performance that highlighted Vietnam’s vibrant traditions.

To commemorate the occasion, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Anh Tuanpresented a special gift to Mr. Sung Kyung Kim, Chairman of Woosong Education Organization.

After six months of competition and four rigorous rounds, the finals of the Social Business Creation (SBC) 2024 took place on October 2, 2024 (local time: October 1) at HEC Montréal Business School, Canada. Out of 106 projects, 417 participants, and 28 countries, Vietnamese teams, particularly those from Foreign Trade University, achieved outstanding results.

The Galaxy Biotech project, led by founder Ms. Do Diem Chau and team leader Do Tuan Anh – a K61 student in International Business – won first place, earning a prize of 30,500 CAD. The project team included six FTU students and three advisors: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ly Nguyen Ngoc and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran nguyen Chat from FTU, and Dr. Tran Xuan Linh from Greenwich Vietnam. Galaxy Biotech’s product, “Breathing Bags”, addresses plastic waste and food preservation issues using advanced nano technology.

Additionally, the Fuwa and Sokfarm projects – both involving FTU students – secured second and third places globally. Several other accolades were awarded to FTU participants, including Audience Choice Award and Credo Impact's Prize.

Six young Vietnamese individuals were honored as Outstanding Global Entrepreneurs, including two FTU students: Nguyen Thu Thuy (Faculty of Banking and Finance) and Le Gia Bao (Faculty of Business Administration). Various advisors and judges from Vietnam also received prestigious awards for their contributions.

This success reflects the creativity and ambition of young Vietnamese talents, reaffirming their readiness to innovate and contribute to sustainable development globally.

On October 14, 2024, Foreign Trade University (FTU) organized the inaugural event for the ASEAN-MERCOSUR Chair Program. This marks the launch of a significant initiative aimed at enhancing economic and trade relations between the ASEAN region and MERCOSUR (the Southern Common Market).

The ceremony was attended by notable guests, including H.E. Marcos Bednarski – Ambassador of Argentina to Vietnam, H.E. Raul Pollak Giampietro – Ambassador of Uruguay to Vietnam, Ms. Ana Nogueira – Deputy Ambassador of Brazil to Vietnam, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ignacio Bartesaghi – Director of the Institute of International Business at the Catholic University of Uruguay and Program Coordinator for the ASEAN-MERCOSUR Chair. The event also saw the participation of FTU faculty, researchers, and students.

In her opening speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thu Huong – Vice President of FTU – emphasized the importance of the ASEAN-MERCOSUR Chair Program in fostering dialogue among academics, governments, and businesses, while encouraging students to seize this opportunity to broaden their perspectives.

The ambassadors reaffirmed their embassies’ support for the ASEAN-MERCOSUR Chair Program, highlighting its potential to strengthen cooperation between the two regions. In a video message, Ms. Ngo Minh Nguyet – Vietnamese Ambassador to Argentina and Uruguay – underscored the shared strengths and potential for collaboration in resources, human capital, and technological advancement.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ignacio Bartesaghi then presented an overview of the program’s objectives and activities for 2024-2025, followed by a discussion on the vast opportunities for cooperation between the two regions in economics, public policy, science, and technology.

On October 4, 2024, Foreign Trade University (FTU) hosted “International Night 2024” – a special event held for the first time for international students studying at the Hanoi campus.

The event honored the presence of distinguished guests, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thi Thu Thuy – Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thu Huong – Vice President, and other leaders of faculties and departments with international students.

In her opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thu Huong expressed her excitement in welcoming more than 80 international students from 15 countries, wishing them a memorable event and fulfilling academic experiences under FTU's roof.

International Night 2024 provided a vibrant and emotional platform where faculty members and students could connect, exchange, and share cultural stories and values. At FTU, international students do not just study; they also promote their countries' cultures and immerse themselves in the unique cultural essence of other nations. Attendees enjoyed the cuisine of 15 countries, personally prepared and served by international students, under the theme “Tastes of Home.” Additionally, creative and exciting music performances further enriched the event.

On October 2, 2024, the Faculty of International Economics of Foreign Trade University (FTU) organized the scientific seminar “Prospects for Vietnam-UAE Economic Cooperation”, featuring Dr. Bader Almatrooshi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Vietnam, as the keynote speaker.

The event was part of a series of activities celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Faculty. Before the seminar officially commenced, Ambassador Bader Almatrooshi, Deputy Ambassador Eisa Almatrooshi, and other economic, political, diplomatic, and cultural leaders from the UAE Embassy in Vietnam paid a courtesy visit and discussed cooperation opportunities between the UAE Embassy and FTU, as well as future collaboration prospects.

On behalf of FTU leadership, the delegation was welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Ngoc Tien – Vice President; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hoang Nam – Head of the Department of Research Administration; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cao Dinh Kien – Director of International Affairs; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Binh – Dean of the Faculty of International Economics.

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Ngoc Tien emphasized that Foreign Trade University strongly believes that international cooperation plays a crucial role in addressing complex global challenges and seizing new opportunities within the global economy. This seminar serves as an excellent opportunity for scholars, researchers, faculty members, and students of the Faculty of International Economics to gain deeper insights into the UAE, thereby fostering future collaboration opportunities, particularly in the field of education.

Before presenting his keynote speech, Ambassador Bader Almatrooshi extended his congratulations on the 15th anniversary of the Faculty of International Economics and presented a bouquet of flowers and a symbolic gift from the UAE to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Xuan Binh – Dean of the Faculty of International Economics.

 

On July 17, 2024, the Institute for Enterprise Training and Consulting (iEIT) of Foreign Trade University (FTU) hosted a working session with a delegation from the Korean Management Consulting Company (KMAC).

Attending the meeting on behalf of KMAC were Mr. Kwang Ho Song, Chief Operating Officer, and Mr. Lee Lib, Deputy Director of Customer Management.

Representing iEIT were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Minh, Director of the Institute for Enterprise Training and Consulting, and Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Bich, Chief of the secretariat at the Institute for Enterprise Training and Consulting.

Building on the success of the "KMAC - FTU: Innovation Ideas 2023" competition, KMAC expressed its desire to continue this initiative with revised and upgraded content to expand its scale, offering more valuable activities for students and businesses through the organizing unit, the Institute for Enterprise Training and Consulting.

Additionally, KMAC mentioned the largest conference series in Korea (ASIA CSCON 24), scheduled for October 2024, which will involve over 3,000 experts from universities and businesses across Asia. During the discussions, KMAC expressed its intention to collaborate with iEIT to invite experts and entrepreneurs from Vietnam to participate in the event, aiming to share experiences and explore cooperation opportunities among countries.

Furthermore, KMAC also expressed a desire for iEIT to conduct research and surveys on Customer Satisfaction Indexes (CSI) in Vietnam across seven sectors (Automobiles, Retail Chains, Convenience Stores, E-wallets, Smartphones, Telecommunications Services, and Banking).

In the open and concise discussion, both parties proposed ideas and developed specific plans and actions for upcoming activities. With maximum effort from the Institute and the University in collaborating with international partners like KMAC, the Institute for Enterprise Training and Consulting at FTU hopes to become a bridge between students, businesses, and international partners in projects that support education, student development, and community value.

From June 30 to July 13, 2024, Foreign Trade University (FTU) hosted a group of students from ISC Paris Business School (France) for a short-term program focused on study, experience, and cultural exchange in Vietnam.

Foreign Trade University and ISC Paris Business School, France, have been close partners since 2013 and have successfully organized student exchange programs over the years.

During the welcome ceremony for the ISC students on July 1, 2024, M.Ed. Dao Thi Thu Ha, Deputy Director of International Affairs, delivered a welcome speech, warmly greeting the students. She emphasized the importance of international integration, stating that all students coming to FTU become part of the FTU family. She expressed her hope that the students would have wonderful and meaningful experiences at FTU and in Vietnam as a whole.

Throughout the two-week program, the ISC Paris students engaged in academic exchanges and cultural interactions that provided them with many valuable and interesting experiences. The program included specialized lectures on Vietnamese culture, history, law, economy, and business environment, held at both the main campus in Hanoi and the Quang Ninh campus, giving students a deeper understanding of the beautiful country of Vietnam.

Additionally, the students visited and explored the operations of Vietnamese businesses such as Tan Do Beverage Company Limited and Uniben Joint Stock Company. The ISC students also had the opportunity to participate in cultural exchange activities aimed at fostering cooperation and friendship between the two schools, as well as attending a business startup sharing session and experiencing cooking traditional Vietnamese dishes. Notably, the ISC students had the chance to visit famous landmarks such as the Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison, Thang Long Imperial Citadel, the Trang An Landscape Complex, Hoa Lu in Ninh Bình, and Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its majestic and poetic beauty.

This trip was not only an opportunity to gain knowledge but also helped the ISC Paris students gain a deeper understanding of Vietnamese culture and people. The enthusiastic support from FTU students, staff, and faculty, as well as the businesses involved in the program, contributed to the success of the study and exchange trip. With the rich and meaningful experiences gained, this trip will undoubtedly serve as a valuable asset, helping the exchange students gain further insights into the culture, business, and life in Vietnam.

On July 24, 2024, Foreign Trade University (FTU) collaborated with the Vietnam Office of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA Vietnam) to organize a special lecture by Professor Tran Van Tho, Emeritus Professor at Waseda University (Japan), with the theme "Innovating Growth Models: Lessons from Japan and Implications for Vietnam."

This special lecture was conducted as part of the series of activities under the JICA Chair Program. Since 2020, JICA has launched the JICA Chair Program, targeting research institutions and leading universities in developing countries to expand opportunities for sharing experiences and lessons learned from development cooperation projects and Japan’s modernization efforts. In Vietnam, JICA began implementing the program in 2021, including activities such as donating books to research institutions on Japan and organizing special lectures by renowned scholars from Japan. In the future, JICA will continue to collaborate with partners to further promote Japan studies in Vietnam and contribute to Vietnam’s sustainable socio-economic development.

Attendees of the program from JICA Vietnam included Mr. Sugano Yuichi, Chief Representative of the Vietnam Office of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA Vietnam). From Foreign Trade University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Ngoc Tien, Vice President of the University; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hoang Nam, Head of the Department of Research Administration; and Heads/Deputy Heads of various units within the university were present. The lecture attracted the participation of over 150 lecturers, students, and interested individuals from private enterprises.

In his opening remarks, Mr. Sugano Yuichi, Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam, emphasized the objectives of the JICA Chair Program. In Vietnam, besides organizing special lectures like this one by renowned scholars from Japan, JICA Vietnam also engages in activities such as donating books to research institutions on Japan. Moving forward, JICA will continue to collaborate with partners to further promote Japan studies in Vietnam and contribute to Vietnam's sustainable socio-economic development. On this occasion, Mr. Sugano Yuichi expressed his gratitude to Foreign Trade University and Professor Tran Van Tho for collaborating with JICA to organize this meaningful program.

Following the opening, Professor Tran Van Tho, Emeritus Professor at Waseda University, presented his lecture on the topic "Innovating Growth Models: Lessons from Japan and Implications for Vietnam."

Professor Tran Van Tho was a former member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Group. Previously, he served in the economic and administrative reform advisory group of the late Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet and collaborated with the policy research team of the late Prime Minister Phan Van Khai. He was one of the first three foreigners invited to serve in multiple terms on the Prime Minister of Japan's Economic Advisory Council. He has also served as an advisor to various Japanese government agencies. Professor Tran Van Tho is the author of several publications in both Japanese and Vietnamese on the economies of Asia, Japan, and Vietnam. His research focuses on economic policy, development economics, international economics, and Asian economics.

In 2010, Vietnam achieved middle-income status and was expected to join the ranks of upper-middle-income countries. However, the country now faces challenges such as avoiding the middle-income trap and transitioning to a high-income country by 2045, as outlined in its national goals.

To achieve the goal of economic restructuring towards high value-added industries, JICA and Foreign Trade University have been conducting training activities since 2000 for entrepreneurs who play a crucial role in developing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and supporting industries through the Vietnam-Japan Human Resources Cooperation Center (VJCC). More than 800 students have completed VJCC’s advanced business program, known as Keieijuku. Many of them have established business relationships with foreign companies, particularly Japanese firms, contributing to Vietnam’s economic and social development.

In this program, with a focus on introducing key growth models, the speaker highlighted lessons for Vietnam from Japan’s experiences. Professor Tran Van Tho stated: "For Vietnam to avoid the middle-income trap and achieve the goal of becoming a high-income country by 2045, it is essential to maintain labor productivity growth and advance economic restructuring. This is the foundation for increasing labor productivity, changing competitive advantages, and maintaining competitiveness in the international market. Moreover, in this process, both capital accumulation and innovation are important, and government policies should aim at enhancing investment efficiency, encouraging innovation, and setting goals for training high-quality human resources to promote economic restructuring." These points were also emphasized in the lecture.

Speaking at the program, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dao Ngoc Tien, Vice President of the University, affirmed that in recent years, Foreign Trade University has focused on four main research areas, including the "Innovation of Socio-Economic Institutions for Sustainable Development." The university has carried out many research tasks, provided policy advice, and organized numerous forums, conferences, and international seminars to discuss drivers, address bottlenecks, and research policy proposals to innovate growth models and achieve sustainable development in Vietnam. With this aim in mind, today’s event is of great significance for the university's research and policy advisory activities and contributes to proposing new ideas and policies to innovate Vietnam’s growth model.
