International Science Seminar on "EU-ASEAN Partnership and Challenges from the Cooperation Initiative of the Economic Superpowers in the Asia-Pacific region"

In two days in October, from 9th to 10th 2017, the Faculty of Law of the Foreign Trade University (FTU) organized the International Scientific Conference on "EU-ASEAN Partnership and Challenges from the Cooperation Initiative of the Economic Superpowers in the Asia-Pacific region".

The seminar celebrated the Traditional Day of FTU and the 5th anniversary of the Faculty of Law. It was co-organized by FTU and the Rennes 2 University (France) and partners from France, Belgium and Canada with the sponsorship of the Embassy of France in Vietnam, the Francophone University Association (Agence universitaire de la Francophonie-AUF), the Delegation of the European Union in Vietnam.

The seminar was attended by 30 speakers from the French Republic (Rennes 1 University, Rennes 2 University, Rouen University, University of Tours, Center for International Relations Studies of France in Asia), Belgium (Gent University), Italia (Bocconi University), Canada (Sherbrooke University, Quebec- Montreal University, Laval University, Ottawa University), Brunei (Brunei Darussalam University), China (Tsinghua University), Vietnam (Foreign Trade University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam). It was also attended by the representatives of the Delegation of the European Union in Vietnam, representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Minister of Justice. A number of private sector representatives such as Michelin Group, Audier & partners company,... also participated in this seminar.

FTU was honored to welcome Mr. Bertrand Lortholary - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of France in Vietnam, Mr. Bruno Angelet - Ambassador of the European Union in Vietnam, Mr. Ngo Chung Khanh - Deputy Director of Multilateral Trade Policy Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), Dr. Nguyen Huu Huyen - Deputy Director General of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Justice), Prof. Lesley Lelourec - Vice President for International Relations of the University of Rennes 2, Prof. Jacques Oulhen - Vice President for Research and Training of the University of Rennes 2, scientists, scholars, international experts from France, Belgium, Canada, Hong Kong, Brunei.

From FTU, there was the presence of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Anh Tuan - President of FTU, Prof. Dr. Hoang Van Chau - Editor in Chief of the External Economies Review - Former President of FTU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy - Vice President of FTU, Dr. Nguyen Minh Hang - Dean of the Faculty of Law, teachers and students of FTU and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Anh Tuan - President of FTU delivered opening remarks and welcomed scientists, scholars, researchers, lawyers, lecturers from ministries, departments, universities, academies, research institutes, training institutions, organizations and individuals from many countries around the world who attended and gave a speech. He affirmed the importance and high academic significance of the seminar topic and expressed his expectation that seminar participants would contribute many new ideas and open discussions to run a successful seminar.

Discussions and exchanges focused on bilateral and multilateral partnerships to establish a research network on "The new dynamic of the EU partnership in Asia-Pacific" (NODYPEX). Over the past decade, the cooperative agreements and economic partnerships and bilateral and multilateral trade were signed consecutively between economic powers in the Asia-Pacific region. Asean and its member countries are located in the important geographic area of ​​the world economy. They are considered as important partners of every economic power in the world. The European Union (EU) is also not out of the trend, which is participated in establishing partnerships with ASEAN countries with relevant geo-economic and geopolitical challenges.

The seminar was held at FTU was the foundation seminar for the new research network (NODYPEX), which aimed at collating the EU-ASEAN partnership with cooperation ideas which were implemented by ASEAN, China and the United States,... in the Asia-Pacific region.

The multidisciplinary research network analyzes the different levels of interaction between regional and inter-regional partnerships, as well as the impact of these partnerships on the future of ASEAN integration and EU-ASEAN relations.

The research network will consist of pillars Rennes 2 University, IODE and CEJM Rennes Research Center in Europe; University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM) in North America and the Foreign Trade University in Asean. The network also welcomes the participation of research centers and universities in Europe, Asia and the Americas. Through its partners, Foreign Trade University is the focal point for expanding this research network to the regional partners.
