Research activities are always encouraged and supported by the FTU. Annual research plans are used as the basis for the calls for, the appraisals of, and the selection of, research proposals, which are financed from a variety of sources.

The FTU Board of Governors plays a proactive role in developing research relationships with different ministries and central and local agencies such as the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Sciences and Technology, and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. These relationships facilitate FTU researchers’ participation in important research projects funded by the Government, which contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.

FTU lecturers have conducted a great number of research projects at Governmental, ministerial, and university level, which have been practically applied. The three Government-level research projects that have significant theoretical and practical implications are the followings:

- “Theoretical and empirical grounds for the development of national and international maritime laws in the frame work of Vietnam’s integration into the region and the world” led by Prof., Dr. Nguyen Thi Mo;

- “Scientific foundations for the development of strategies to export made-in-Vietnam goods into the EU market from 2001 to 2010” led by Prof., Dr. Vu Chi Loc.

- Financial Market Development – Korean experience & lessons for Vietnam.

FTU lecturers have conducted international joint research projects under different research schemes such as the EU funded ASIA LINK program and the SEAMEO-RELC-funded research projects. The FTU has created partnerships with local and international businesses to work together on research projects in the fields of economics, finance, trade, management, and law.

The FTU also invites foreign professors to the University for lecturing and conducting research. Strong relations have been established between the FTU and institutions from the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Japan, China, Thailand, etc.

The FTU has also been recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training as one of the leading institutions that manage excellent students’ research activities resulting in a great number of research works winning prizes in different competitions. The most prestigious of which is the “Students Research Competition” conducted annually by the MOET. Over the last 5 years, out of about 40 students’ research works submitted to this Competition, two have won First Prizes, seven have won Second Prizes, eight have won Third Prizes, and 23 have won Encouragement Prizes.
